About Sunnybrae Elementary School
Sunnybrae School is a place where all people, big and little, have the right to be treated with respect and have the responsibilities of respectable people. Students are expected to contribute to the best of their abilities, parents are expected to be partners with the school in the educational progress of their children and teachers as well as other building adults are expected to coordinate efforts to provide interesting, productive learning experiences. We are a family of achievers. The mission of Sunnybrae School shall be to create students who are healthy in mind, body and spirit. We work together to create a love a reading by incorporating a daily, mandatory independent reading period where teachers and students read and converse together about great literature. We have also created a Running Club for students, teachers and parents. Our club runs three days a week after school and will compete in two 5K runs during the year. We do this to promote our school as a community partnership.
Our active and supportive PTA continues to heighten the overall functioning of the school by supplementing resources. Parent volunteers staff “Book Fairs”, the School Media Center for book selection, PTA Movie Nights, Ice Cream Socials and other events that bring the school community together. They also provide educational assemblies for the students and support the many field trips that the students take. We also have parents working at stations at our school Field Day, helping out at Grandparents’ Day, our Incoming Kindergarten Tea, raising funds to provide special school gifts including wonderful programs, sponsoring the sale of school sportswear to encourage school spirit, providing for the needs of others through Community Outreach projects and helping in other areas. We have a December Pancake Dinner with a Santa’s workshop, which is a big community event.
Our Character Education Program is designed to improve school climate, foster acceptable behavior and raise self-esteem. Each month one theme is highlighted, reinforced in the classroom. lunchroom and in guidance lessons and students are recognized for their ability to be a leader in that area. This program teaches children what is expected and subsequently rewards positive behavior rather than focusing on the negative. The children learn and utilize the Win/Win Guidelines of Conflict Resolution, and they learn to be cooperative and caring
In addition to maintaining high expectations for pupil performance and behavior, our teachers and parents sponsor programs such as our Father/Daughter Dance, The Amazing Race, Bingo Night, Red Cross Activities, Grandparents’/Senior Friends Day, Behavior/Good Health Assemblies, Earth Week activities, and Our Respect/Diversity Activities.
Sunnybrae School is a “hive” of activity. As the birthplace of the state insect (the honeybee) we endeavor to live up to our school mascot and keep flying. Once a month we celebrate our school spirit and pride by wearing our school colors and Sunnybrae shirts. Sunnybrae is a “colony” of blue and gold “busy bees”. Finally, Sunnybrae has students feeling good about themselves, working to their best abilities, and being caring, kind, and cooperative individuals.
