My name is Jayme Canavera & I'm a Fine Arts teacher here at Hamilton West. I knew in 8th grade, thanks to my own art teacher, that I wanted to be an Art teacher when I "grew up". Thanks to my own middle school Art teacher's amazing guidance and inspiration, I knew that Art was where my true passion was, and sharing that passion is one of the most important things in my life.
I graduated from Hamilton West in 2003, and then graduated from Montclair State University in January 2008 with a BA in Fine Arts Education with a concentration in Ceramics. I started my teaching career at Nottingham High School in 2008, then taught at Reynolds Middle School for 3 years from 2010-2013. While there, I continued my education at LaSalle University, completing my MA degree in Clinical Counseling Psychology with a minor in Addictions Counseling in August 2015. In Fall 2013, I began teaching at Hamilton West, and knew I didn't ever want to teach anywhere else because West really is BEST! I currenly teach 5 different classes: Ceramics & Sculpture, Mixed Media, Drawing & Painting 1, Commercial Design & Illustration, and Art Fundamentals. I can genuinely say that I truly love my job. No two days are the same, and I enjoy being able to watch the creative process my students go through with each project, in each class, each year that they are in my classroom. Creating amazing artwork while creating bonds with students is the main reason I continue to teach year after year.
Aside from teaching, I also started the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) here at Hamilton West for the first time in HHW history in 2018. Because it's in it's first year, I'm hoping this program continues to grow over the years and becomes something students strive to be a part of during their time as an art student at West.
